A Middle Grade Adventure Series
Book One
He reluctantly moved to Florida and was anxious to make new friends. He didn't expect to discover that monsters are real — and that he's one of the few people who can stop them.
The Story
Twelve-year-old Jake Evens didn't want to move to Florida. He left behind his friends, the mountain trails, and everything familiar in Colorado, all for it to be replaced with salty air and a surfboard. But within days he's learning to ride waves, meeting Ace, the three-time state surfing champion, and catching the attention of Sammy, the girl who lives down the street.
Then something steps out of the dark on his walk home. Six and a half feet of bark-skinned, sulfur-smelling nightmare, and Jake's life changes forever.
The creatures are called De'Jinn. They've always been here. Most people can't see them. A secret organization called The Unknown has been fighting them for years, armed with captured magic stored in gemstones. And now Jake is one of them.
But something is different about Jake. Something the De'Jinn have noticed too.
The De'Jinn
Every monster myth has a truth at its core. The De'Jinn have walked among us for centuries — unseen by those who don't believe, dangerous to those who do.
The Team
Most of their members are kids. It turns out the older you get, the harder it is to believe in things you can't explain.
From Chapter One
He reached for the surfboard when he heard it again — scritch-scratch — from inside the linen closet. The metallic smell was back too. Jake froze. It wasn’t his mom typing. The sound stopped the second he looked toward the door. Just the house creaking, he thought to himself. He tried to pretend he wasn’t spooked as he passed the door, but the hair on his arms stood up in betrayal.
He shook his head and kept going.
“Bye Mom,” he yelled out as he dashed to the door. He had to meet Ace who had offered to teach him to surf.
Jake dragged the bright yellow surfboard across the hot sand and already felt a little silly, everyone else made it look easy. The board was heavier than it looked in movies, and every time it smacked his leg it felt like the universe was against him.
In Colorado he knew exactly who he was. Jake Evans, decent baseball player, king of the neighborhood bike trails, best friend to David Martinez. Here in Florida, he was just the new kid with pale legs and zero clue how to stand up on water.
TRAIN WITH JAKE
Each stone has four powers. Each power uses one charge. Combined powers use two charges. Time your strike. Manage your gemstones. Survive all 7 waves.
Hint: What is their weakness?
